ELECTRIC DISTRIBUTION
The electric distribution department
consists of the supervisor, Gary Rowden, two electric linemen, one lineman/plant
technician, and one seasonal employee. This department maintains the operation
of the electric lines and transformers, the electric meters, and the street
lights.
New Service
The electric department is responsible for
installing the utility pole and the meter for new service. The resident must
hire a certified electrician to extend the line from the pole to the existing
residence.
Jamie Gold and Barry Gaskill,
former employees of the electric department, brave the heights to repair an electric
service.
Damaged or Broken Property
Damaged utility poles, sagging utility
lines, broken security lights, etc. should be reported to the electric
department during regular business hours. For after-hour emergencies, contact
the power plant at 620-544-2478.
Power Outage
In the case of a power outage in your home
or business, please check your breakers before notifying the electric
department. Report the problem to the electric department with the following
information: address of the power outage, length of time the power has been off,
and the symptoms of the problem (ex. blinking lights, part of the house without
power, total power loss, power surges, etc.).
Security Lights
Security lights provide extra lighting in
areas that the street lights just don't reach. They provide an added sense of
protection, knowing that your property is well lit.
These 250 watt lights may be installed for
a one-time fee of $60, and a monthly fee of $5.25 to maintain the light. The
installation fee must be paid at the time of installation, and the monthly fee
appears on your monthly utility billing.
Replacing burnt-out bulbs, broken globes,
etc. is the responsibility of the electric department. To report problems with
your security light, contact the electric department at 620-544-8531.
Storm Sirens
The electric department maintains the
storm sirens for the city. Anytime that you notice the siren in your
neighborhood not working, please report this to the electric department.
Christmas Decorations
The Christmas decorations you see hanging
from the light poles downtown during December are courtesy of the electric
department. The festive trees, wreaths, and candles bring a warm glow to the
downtown area, beginning the day after Thanksgiving and usually remain until New
Years Day.
Meters
Meters are installed, maintained, and
removed by the electric department. Meter readings are obtained monthly on the
15th by the electric department and the street department. If there is a problem
with the meter, it will be inspected by the electric department. If found to be
in need of replacement, a new meter will be installed.
Street Lights
Street lights are placed at the
intersections to provide adequate lighting for night traffic. If you notice a
street light that is out, please report this to the electric department.
